Two gambling expansion bills voted down by the Pennsylvanian House last week and including online gambling legalisation could be back on the table for more discussion when lawmakers return from a brief break next week, according to political observers.
Our readers will recall that due to the confusion surrounding the rejection of the bills, immediate motions for reconsideration were approved, keeping the measures, which would also seek authority to position slot machines at airports and off-track betting parlours, and controversially introduce video gaming terminals at bars and truck stops.
On Tuesday the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that with the budget deadline of July 1 drawing closer, House Republicans have indicated that they will make another push to get some sort of legislation passed, hoping to generate around $278 million toward the state’s monumental $1 billion budget deficit.
The newspaper quotes House Majority Leader Dave Reed, who said that his goal was for gaming revenues to be part of the final budget package.
“We wanted to kind of test it out in May, but obviously when we come back in June it will be full guns a-blazing trying to get a budget done, and that will be part of that process,” he said.
