Persistent online gambling operator busted again

The dogged persistence of illegal Malaysian online gambling operators despite a toxic enforcement environment was again illustrated in Kuching this weekend when police from the D7 unit of the Criminal Investigation Department hammered a covert online casino in Jalan Datuk Tawi.

The 50-year-old as yet unnamed operator of the luxuriously carpeted and appointed centre for the online casino had been previously shuttered by police just months earlier and had lost 35 sets of computer equipment, but set up a new operation as soon as he had been released.

Now he is back in police custody after being arrested in a further late afternoon raid in which another 18 computer sets were seized.

Police spokesman Dev Kumar said the police team from D7 conducted the raid at about 5.30pm.

“18 computers used for online gambling were seized from the club. The operator of the gambling outlet, a 50-year-old man from Kuala Lumpur, was arrested,” he said, revealing that the same premises had been raided in August, during which 35 computer sets were confiscated.

“Despite continuous raids, operators continue to defy the police ban on cyber gambling in the state. The CID will not let up in our efforts to eradicate the scourge of Internet gambling in the state,” he warned.
