Immigration and police authorities in the Philippines city of Makati raided an office block this week and arrested 80 Chinese nationals on illegal online gambling and immigration charges.
Bobby Raquepo, a spokesman for the Bureau of Immigration, said the Chinese nationals failed to show legal documents on their immigration status and will be held whilst full checks are carried out.
In the past similar raids have proved to be flawed attempts to shut down legal support centres with no direct involvement in offering gambling (see previous reports). These dubious raiding activities resulted in police disciplinary measures and the suspension of a judge for not properly interrogating police applications for search warrants.
