Playtech gains an edge in Philippines online gambling

News on 17 Oct 2018

Playtech, or more correctly its distributor associate Montford Inc., has scored a significant coup in the Philippines after being tapped by regulator Pagcor as the exclusive Gaming Software Provider for Philippine Offshore Gambling Operator (POGO) licensees.

Montford is thus far the sole such authorised provider of “RNG casino games” for licensees. The Pagcor announcement carries a sting in the tail, warning POGO operators that any of them “found to be using games developed by an unauthorized service provider, or those who engage the services of a gaming software provider not accredited by PAGCOR, shall have imposed the corresponding demerits and administrative penalties.”

Continued non-compliance could ultimately result in licence revocation, the regulator warns.

On the face of it, the Pagcor decision gives a monopoly to Montford-Playtech, and several operators have privately railed against the rule, saying it is inappropriate in today’s markets where operators are expected to offer a wide selection of games from diverse developers.

The news will almost certainly make Playtech happy and give some relief from the competitive pressure its Asian operations have been under.

It’s not Playtech’s first exclusive either – observers have pointed out that the company has selected as sole and exclusive technology partner in Poland for Totalizator Sportowy’s eKasyno project.
