New Zealand’s minister for horse racing, Nathan Guy, has indicated that government is planning changes to the 2003 Racing Act, apparently in an effort to shield the local New Zealand Racing Board from competitive international operators.
Reports suggest that a point-of-consumption tax on international operators is being considered, along with a royalty fee for their use of New Zealand race data.
Guy intimated that the changes will be submitted to parliament as soon as practicable; in the meantime other elements of gambling are being reviewed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and could result in further amendments to gambling laws.
The New Zealand Racing Board, which has pending technology deals with PaddyPower Betfair and Openbet regarding its fixed odds betting platform, has voiced support for Minister Guy’s plans, and has assured local punters that it is currently hard at work developing a more competitive strategy designed to meet the challenge of currently superior betting options and services offered by international operators.
