The directorial debut of Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin is to be the upcoming movie Molly’s Game, an adaptation of the story of the US celebrity poker game ring dominated by “poker princess” Molly Bloom and spectacularly demolished by US federal enforcement agencies (see previous reports).
The script is based on the memoir of the same title which recounts the rise and fall of Molly Bloom from world-class skier to the high profile organiser who hobnobbed with the famous and wealthy and made millions running exclusive high-stakes poker games.
Her clients included such luminaries as Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Tobey Maguire, but her downfall was swift when she came to the attention of the FBI, although her punishment of a $1,000 fine and a year’s probation was mild.
According to the publication Deadline, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of The Social Network will work alongside ex-Sony head Amy Pascal as producer. Sorkin will also write the script.
Although it will be Sorkin’s debut as a director, he has been involved in producing major television projects like The Newsroom, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Sports Night and The West Wing.
Sorkin is already up for awards for his screenplay on Apple’s legendary leader Steve Jobs, which has since become a hit film. Deadline reports that he has also been engaged to write the script for a biopic on comedy star Lucille Ball, who will be played by Cate Blanchett.
