The Yonhap news agency reports that South Korean Police have become involved and arrested dozens of Hyundai Motor Co. employees following an internal company audit where 62 factory workers were found to have been involved in multi-million dollar illegal gambling during office hours.
Hyundai’s internal audit additionally found that a further 35 workers at a different plant were placing bets on the internet during office hours.
Police are seeking to obtain arrest warrants for another four employees for habitual gambling. The online gambling allegedly took place during office hours between January 2009 and May 2010 using computers situated in a factory staff lounge.
The four people are said to have each gambled an average amount of 300 million won, approximately $285 000 over the period with Regional Police confirming that one person placed as many as 700 bets during the cited period.
A hunt for the operators of the unnamed illegal internet gambling sites is also ongoing commented the authorities.
“We decided to apply for arrest warrants for some of the staff since the money at stake is huge and we need to preemptively block widespread cyber gambling,” said a police official.
