Polish government rows back from banned internet domains register

The Polish Ministry of Digitisation appears to have pulled back from its controversial proposal to maintain a central registry of prohibited domains, which could have included a provision requiring ISPs to provide information on individual Polish citizens who visited banned websites (see previous reports).

The government’s possible interference with the operations of ISPs and related privacy concerns caused a storm of public and media protest that appears to have persuaded government to row back from the contentious proposals.

On Tuesday a Ministry announcement said the project had been discontinued, emphasised that its proposals had been misinterpreted, and claimed that there had never been an intention on the part of government to restrict the freedom of the internet.
