750 000 Chinese mainland tourists flocked to Macau during Golden Week, an annual holiday in the first week of October, and the boost is just what Macau needs following a steady decline in casino revenue over the past four months.
Foreign news agencies say political demonstrations in Hong Kong have provided the impetus behind the influx of tourists to the gambling Mecca.
Macau reported 17 percent accelerated growth in visitors over the same period last year, compared to Hong Kong’s 5.4 percent increase in visitors and 50 percent decline in retail sales compared to Golden Week 2013.
