Rhode Island state police have announced the break-up of a sports betting ring following a police operation in northern Rhode Island Tuesday in which thirteen individuals were arrested on charges of organised criminal gambling, bookmaking and conspiracy.
State police spokesman Lt. Col Michael J. Winquist named David Ayotte (53) as the principal defendant in the case, which involved twelve other persons aged between 29 and 68 years.
The police used wiretapping technology in their investigations, and claim that the betting ring accepted around $130,000 in illegal wagers, using a pawn shop as a front.
In a police swoop on the premises, cash to the value of $100,000 was seized.
