Russian telecomms regulator Roskomnadzor continued its assault on illegal online gambling websites throughout the month of August, reporting that 14,500 domains were blocked.
Sports betting is the only form of online gambling permitted in Russia, with just fifteen licensed and therefore authorised operators accounting for 60 percent in the market.
That hasn’t stopped a plethora of external operators from going after the other 40 percent, triggering increasingly aggressive banning and preventative measures by the regulator.
In online gambling domain blocks alone, Roskomnadzor has this year (to end August) acted against more than 76,000 domains, an almost 270 percent increase on the whole of 2017, with four months of 2018 yet to pass.
