Sharp rise in Nevada gambling revenue in January

The latest Nevada Gaming Control Board figures reveal that gambling revenues across the state grew 12 percent year-on-year in January, with Clark County leading on $925 million – a 14.3 percent y-o-y improvement.
The Strip also prospered, delivering a 14.4 percent increase in revenue to $532 million.
Total gaming win for January reached $1.04 billion, a 12.02 percent increase compared to January 2016; according to Board analyst Mike Lawton “…the highest win amount since February of 2013.”
Lawton also commented that this was the second time in the past seven months that the state gambling revenue has breached the billion-dollar barrier.
Lawton said that the driving factor behind the good month was the Chinese New Year beginning at the end of January, as opposed to last year being entirely in February.
“Chinese New Year is a big event that brings in a lot of baccarat play,” Lawton said. “It was a very good month for baccarat.”
Lawton revealed that baccarat recorded a win of $157.9 million in January, up 55.1 percent compared to the same month last year. Volume was also up 47.8 percent on the game, generating a total volume of $935.6 million.
Downtown Las Vegas revenue was up 32 percent, and North Las Vegas rose 25.94 percent, due in part to the New Year’s Eve holiday occurring on a weekend, Lawton said.
