Singapore police bust illegal betting syndicate

Eighteen suspects were arrested by Singapore Police in an island-wide operation today that crippled an alleged illegal betting syndicate.

Authorities believe the suspects to have taken illegal soccer bets amounting to S$ 8 Million in the past two weeks alone, Asia News reported.

The Singapore Criminal Investigation Department (CID) seized S$1.4 million, computers, phones, betting records and bank transaction records in multiple raids across Singapore suburbs Bukit Panjang, Ang Mo Kio, Whampoa, Telok Blangah, Bedok, Sentosa, Marsiling and Woodlands.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Kenny Tan in a press briefing said:  “Bookmakers and bettors who assume that they can hide behind the anonymity of the Internet to commit criminal offences should think twice.  The police will find them and prosecute both bookmakers and bettors alike to the fullest extent of the law.”

Suspects face up to five-year jail sentences or fines up to S$200 000 if found guilty of bookmaking while punters placing bets with those bookmakers could be jailed for up to six months and be given fines maxed at S$5 000.
