Singapore police report that following simultaneous police raids across the island an illegal online sports betting ring has been dismantled and 31 male suspects arrested.
Police raiding parties seized Singapore $1.2 million (about US$ 900,000), computers and other evidence in the operation Monday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation and Intelligence) Florence Chua said at a press conference that the operation was part of the police initiative to stamp out illegal online gambling, with particular emphasis on the currently running World Cup football championships.
“Police take a serious view against such activities and will continue to take tough enforcement actions against those who flout the law, including those who assist remote gambling syndicates in any way,” she said.
Illegal bets worth more than S$4 million were believed to have been placed and received by the suspects in the past two weeks, said police.
