Indonesia, one of the rare states that accepts traditional sharia laws and punishments, carried out a public whipping this week on a group of men sentenced to between seven and eleven lashes after being convicted of illegal online gambling in an internet cafe.
The men, all from the Aceh province were made to stand facing a jeering crown in front of a mosque whilst a robed and masked official meted out the punishment with a long cane
Local officials told the AFP news agency:
“They have violated the Qanun Jinayah (Islamic law) by being involved in gambling.”
The news agency reports that public flogging is a common punishment in Aceh for a range of offences including gambling, drinking alcohol, and having gay sex or relations outside of marriage.
Located at the northern tip of Sumatra island, it is the only province in the world’s largest Muslim-majority country that imposes Islamic law.
