Slovakia president vetoes new gambling act

Slovakian President Andrej Kiska has vetoed the new Gambling Act passed by the country’s parliament earlier this month, TASR reports.

Kiska recommended the act be rejected in its entirety saying the gambling industry requires a “more sophisticated” regulatory approach which goes beyond the scope of the existing bill.

In addition Kiska expressed concern on consumer protection and the protection of personal data measures. He expects the legislature to submit a strategy on what problem gambling programmes will be funded by gambling taxes.

Kiska also wants local governments to be granted more authority in determining what type of gambling will be permitted within their municipalities.

The legislature can either amend the bill to cover Kiska’s concerns or override his veto through a vote in the National Council.
