South Africa ISPs may face stiff fines if found aiding internet gambling

News on 19 Oct 2010

South African gambling laws were recently amended to declare online gambling illegal and the regulator has announced that companies found aiding internet gambling could face fines to the tune of R10 million (1 million Euro).
South African ISP’s are stating that policing the internet is not their job and that to do so, would require millions to be spent on a new infrastructure.
According to the decision handed down by the High Court in August 2010 – unlawful transactions include Internet operators who offer on-line gambling, a player or punter who participates in on-line gambling transactions, persons or organisations which facilitate the provision of online gambling such as Internet Service Providers and Financial providers such as banks.
An appeal of the court ruling is expected, but not yet scheduled.
