South African online gambling raid

The Mpumalanga Gambling Board and South African police authorities raided an online gambling venue disguised as an internet cafe in Mashishing this week.

Twenty computer terminals were confiscated and the venue shut down.

Bheki Mlambo of the Mpumalanga Gambling Board issued a warning to illegal online gambling operators saying these businesses hinder legitimate economic growth and flout existing gambling laws.

“They are liable for prosecution and similarly anyone using these illegal services will also be prosecuted leading to a fine of up to R10 Million or up to 10 years of imprisonment or both,” said Mlambo.

Police spokesperson Col Leonard Hlati added: “We are working hard to clampdown on these outlets as they appear to be a growing trend.”
