Spanish decrees on licences approved

The Spanish Trade Association AEDAPI has voiced its satisfaction over the Spanish Cabinet’s approval today (Friday) of the decrees on online gambling licences and technical requirements that will govern the operation of online gaming and its operators from January 1, 2012.

The completion of this important administrative step opens the door for operators to finally apply for a licence to offer online gambling in Spain.

AEDAPI points out, however, that the attractiveness of the Spanish market is lessened by what it terms as “uncompetitive law” referring to the high 25 percent taxation on operator’s net income, a lack of international liquidity and the temporary exclusion of some forms of gambling.

“We are pleased with the approval of the decrees because for the first time in Spain, the operator may apply for a license to develop their online gambling business. However, the law that we have will be very competitive and companies are going to find it difficult to be profitable in this country. In this sense, we believe there is still much work to be done and many ways to improve gambling laws for the Spanish market,” said an AEDAPI statement.
