Malaysian police, already acknowledged as one of the most consistently strict enforcers of anti-online and land gambling laws, are to take the fight up a level with the formation of a special task force, says the minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The minister told reporters Friday that he expects the new task force to be formed within the next two weeks, and be in full operational action within three months, following the approval of the project by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“At the ministry, we feel that illegal gambling has started to become a very serious problem that would affect the people, especially those in the lower income group, which in turn could lead to the destruction of the family institution,” Minister Hamidi said.
“This team is similar to the task force that was established to fight organised crime and the Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) that was set up to combat drug trafficking. It will take action directly at specific targets.”
