The Australian National Rugby League (NRL) has announced the renewal and enhancement of a four-year sponsorship contract worth A$60 million with Paddy Power’s Australian online sports betting subsidiary Sportsbet.
The agreement will run through 2020, ensuring a stream of funding for all levels of the game, according to an NFL statement Friday. Advantages for the sports betting company include advertising and publicity opportunities during NFL competitions and digital access to rugby fans across the nation.
However, as NRL commercial executive Andrew Abdo pointed out, there are conditions imposing some restrictions on betting promotions in order to protect minors, and a requirement for Sportsbet to put up the cash and promote a responsible gaming program…probably a move to placate the current Australian media and political witch hunt against gambling.
