According to ESPN, official NFL data distributor Sportradar’s launch of the iPRO sports betting app Ringit! was “abruptly scaled back” following a statement from the league that said it hadn’t approved use of its data in a game that would allow fans to predict, and eventually wager money on, every NFL play.
Sportradar’s initial release had announced the app for play using virtual coins that would eventually extend to “feature both fantasy play and full sports betting for cash” in regulated territories.
In a further announcement, Sportradar backtracked saying the data would be provided to iPro for a social game where no money exchanges hands.
“This was done without our knowledge or consent. We are speaking to Sportradar US. This [real-money betting] is not permitted in our agreement,” Brian McCarthy, spokesman for the NFL told ESPN TV programme Outside the Lines.
