Stable lad wins GBP 1 million in Cheltenham betting group

Stable lad, Conor Murphy, has won GBP 1 million from a GBP50 accumulator bet placed on five of his employers winning horses who ran at the Cheltenham Festival this week.

The Cork-born man placed the accumulator bet in December 2011, on Sprinter Sacre, Simonsig, Bob’s Worth, Riverside Theatre and Finian’s Rainbow to win their respective races, affording him much stronger odds than if he had placed the bet closer to the event which would have netted him an estimated GBP 32 000 instead.

Murphy’s employer, Nicky Henderson said:  “It’s absolutely wonderful. He (Murphy) is the nicest, kindest, gentlest man.  He’s obviously got more confidence in me than I have and he obviously took a rather strong view, before Christmas, I gather.”

Bet365 is rumoured to be the unfortunate bookmaker making the massive payout, however a spokesperson declined to comment on an individual account and would go no further than saying “This one particular customer’s had an extremely good time of it”.

And it’s not the only big gamble that has paid off this week at the Cheltenham Festival.  Horse owner, Phil Williams, reportedly won GBP 900 000 on a bet placed on his own horse Son of Flicka.
