The Korea Herald reports an interesting development in a case involving a man imprisoned for running an illegal online gambling website with a server based in Hong Kong between 2008 and 2009.
Police have found a stash of over 8 billion South-Korean Won ($7.4 million) in cash that was hidden under the soil on a garlic farm in the Gimje, North Jeolla Province in Korea belonging to the man’s brother-in-law – identified only as Lee (53). The stash is said to belong to Lee’s imprisoned relative.
Authorities said the amount found brings the total illegal fund to 11 Billion South-Korean Won.
Police have issued a warrant for Lee’s arrest and believe there is a possibility that more may be found in other novel hiding places – on other properties the man owns.
Observers have noted that the accumulation of slush funds has become easier since the 50,000 Won-note was adopted in 2009.
The incarcerated relative is due to be released next month after serving his 18 month-term.
