Swedish gambling monopoly operator Svenska Spel has been awarded a three year (rather than the usual two) licence to offer lottery, betting, casino, slots and poker gambling both offline and online in Sweden.
The award comes as Sweden comes under growing pressure from the European Commission to reform its gambling system in order to comply with European Union laws. The country’s Ministry of Finance is currently planning a review as the first step toward such reforms, which could see Svenska Spel’s monopolistic nature changed (see previous reports).
The company has on several occasions blamed competition from unlicensed offshore operators for its falling revenues, appealing to government for protection through the introduction and enforcement of more restrictive laws.
