Britain’s Football Association, governing body for soccer in the UK, has slapped a GBP 700 fine and a warning on future conduct on Swansea FC player James Demetriou, who has admitted to 13 counts of betting on football matches in contravention of the FA Rule E8.
The FA’s ruling does not identify the matches on which the 19-year-old player wagered between 3 December 2013 and 21 January 2015.
There is little room for excuses by FA players when it comes to the blanket ban on betting imposed by the Association to protect the integrity of the “beautiful game”; extensive efforts have been made by the authorities to educate players on the betting rule, including the production of a video here:
Demetriou’s fine follows a heavier punishment of GBP 3,000 meted out by the FA to Ipswich player Edward Bishop in May this year for betting related offences.
