According to the Swedish gaming authority, Lotteriinspektionen, 64 percent of all gambling advertising on television is generated by unlicenced operators.
Unlicenced foreign operators reportedly spent in the region of SEK 1 Billion gross on television advertising during 2013.
Svenska Spel, ATG and various lotteries such as Postkodlotteriet and Bingolotto are the main licenced operators in the market; however media that have their broadcasting licences in other EU countries, such as TV3 and Kanal 5 can promote games that are not licenced in Sweden.
Total Kroner spent in 2013 on television advertising totaled SEK 1,7 Billion of which SEK 617,million (Euro 68 million) was spent by licenced operators and SEK 1 Billion (Euro 119.5 million) by unlicenced foreign companies.
By comparison, total Kroner spent in 2010 was SEK 792,232,000 (Euro 87.3 million) of which SEK 365,235,000 (Euro 40.2 million) was spent by authorised operators and SEK 426,997,000 (Euro 47million) by unlicenced foreign companies.
Late last year, Lotteriinspektionen subpoenaed local newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen for providing links to offshore gambling operators via their websites .
