Media on the island of Taiwan report that Taiwanese and Chinese enforcement officials working together in a rare collaborative effort busted a Taiwan-based online gambling ring Tuesday, breaking up an illegal enterprise that generated revenues as high as NT$100 million (US$3.334 million).
A spokesman for Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) told reporters that the illegal gambling website sold gambling chips and points that could be used for exchanges between other websites and converted into cash.
Through the website, online gamblers could bet on hundreds of games by just printing out payment slips at convenience stores, he said.
The online gambling website’s operator is in Taiwan, while its servers are reportedly in Canada and its Support centre in China.
The geographically dispersed business model was clearly designed to avoid detection by the police, the spokesman added.
CIB investigators worked on the case with China’s Online Information Security Bureau. The CIB team coordinated with police authorities in Taoyuan and Keelung, leading to the arrest of four people and the confiscation of documentary and physical evidence.
