Taiwan police have announced the arrest of 45 individuals for operating an illegal online and mobile betting ring that allegedly generated revenues in excess of $40 million.
The Agence France Presse news agency reports that wagering included bets on the outcome of local elections as well as sports and lottery activity.
The arrests followed police raids on 31 venues across the island over the weekend in which police spokesmen named one Lin Shih-yuan as the ring-leader; he is currently in custody, whilst 15 defendants have been bailed and 29 others released, but under restrictions.
