Online gambling operators in Portugal will be hauling out their calculators following local media reports that government is considering the introduction of a flat 25 percent online tax rate based on GGR in its 2019 budgetary plans.
Sports betting operators will be especially interested, given the ferocious 8 to 16 percent tax on turnover with which they are currently burdened. Online casino and poker operators have a less punitive tax regime of 15 to 30 percent based on GGR, but the larger operators will no doubt see some benefit if the proposals are carried through.
Operators have become increasingly vociferous regarding the heavy taxes, attributing the relative lack of interest in Portuguese online licenses (there are currently only 13 since legalisation two years ago) on the tax issue, along with the decreasing tax revenue the government has harvested.
