The UK Advertising Standards Authority has sanctioned Coral Interactive for an email and a pop-up ad which promoted free GBP 10 bets on the outcome of Euro 2016 matches.
One of the significant terms not included in the main body of the email and pop-up ad was that the bet was placed after 8pm.
Coral acknowledged the error leading the ASA to uphold the two complaints and order the company to ensure the promotional material not appear in its current form again.
Another email promoted a free bet offer stating “… Bet £/€20 on any team to win the Euros & get a free £/€10 bet every time a British or Irish team scores in the first round of matches.*…”.
Three complainants, who received the email and after placing their bets were informed that they were not eligible to participate in the offer, challenged whether it misleadingly implied the offer was open to all recipients.
Coral Interactive acknowledged that the targeted promotion had been mistakenly sent to some customers who were restricted from receiving free bets and explained it had been followed up advising those customers that they were in fact not eligible and apologised for any inconvenience.
The ASA again upheld the complaint, saying “We considered that anyone receiving the email would expect they could take advantage of the free bet offer,” whether it had been sent in error or not.
