Our readers may recall the move in Iowa through State Study Bill 1068 to legalise intrastate online poker if provided from existing licensed land casinos; Thursday 28 February is the crunch day for the bill, which will be considered today by a state senate sub-committee.
It’s the second attempt to legalise online poker in the state, the first having failed in the House last year, although it managed to survive the Senate.
A number of industry experts have speculated that the now fast-moving legalisation scene in Delaware, Nevada and New Jersey could influence Iowa lawmakers to follow suit, but a poll commissioned by the Des Moines Register newspaper recently may trigger counter-sentiments.
The poll, conducted by Selzer & Co. of West Des Moines, comprised 802 Iowa adults interviewed February 3-6, and showed that nearly three-quarters of Iowans surveyed said they opposed legalisation, and are in no hurry to gamble at their home computers.
