Poland now licenses 14 online sports betting operators following the issue by the Finance Ministry last week of permits to Traf-Zakłady Wzajemne Sp., a land horserace betting operator with links to the state run Totalizator Sportowy’s monopoly lottery, and Typiko Sp.
Seven online sports betting licenses have been awarded in 2018, but many operators reportedly continue to shy away from the market due to high tax rate of 12 percent on turnover, and reservations regarding the monopolistic position of Totalizator Sportowy in the online casino vertical.
Some international operators are taking the risk of offering unlicensed services in the Polish market, but could run afoul of increasingly energetic enforcement efforts by the government, which blacklists offenders.
