One of online gambling’s strongest political supporters in the United States, New Jersey Senator Jim Whelan, has passed on, triggering respectful praise for his integrity and 30-year career of public service from a host of high profile political and industry personalities that includes Governor Chris Christie.
The 68-year-old Senator and former Atlantic City teacher and mayor underwent surgery to remove cancerous cells from his kidney in early July at the University of Pennsylvania, according to media reports. Whilst the surgery was a success, the Senator experienced complications from blood thinners and passed away on Tuesday.
Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian spoke fondly of Sen. Whelan, saying: “He took me under his wing like a big brother. Jim dedicated his whole life to public service to Atlantic City, whether serving as a lifeguard, a coach and teacher, councilman, mayor or state senator. May he rest in peace.”
Gov. Chris Christie said Whelan’s sudden and unexpected death is an enormous loss to the people of Atlantic City, his district and all of the state.
“During my eight years in Trenton, I came to know Jim as a forthright and honest leader whose word was his bond. While we did not always agree on policy, he was always willing to listen and reason together. The current comeback of Atlantic City is due in no small part to the efforts and passion of Jim Whelan,” Christie said in a statement.
