U.S. tribal operators seek authority to offer sports betting

Yet another interested group has come forward with its concerns regarding a possibly post-Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act future in which sports betting is more widely liberalised in the United States.

The National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA) resolved at its recent convention to ask the US Congress to ensure that in the event of PASPA being overturned by the US Supreme Court tribal operators will be permitted to offer sports betting.

The resolution urges state lawmakers as well to recognise and protect tribal operators and permit them to offer tax-free sports betting in those states which decide to embrace a wider sports betting dispensation, should this come about.

PASPA and the 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) currently make it illegal for tribal operators to offer sports betting on tribal lands, and the tribes are concerned that the US Supreme Court decision in the New Jersey sports betting issue could overturn PASPA as far as individual US states are concerned, but leave in place the prohibitions regarding tribal operators.
