Punters in Uganda, an East African nation that has an active gambling industry worth around the equivalent of US$42 million and includes online betting, are unlikely to be pleased with a new proposal from the Ministry of Finance to spread the tax burden across both operators and players.
Currently the Income Tax Act imposes a crippling 35 percent tax rate on operators, and players are not taxed on winnings, but if the government has its way punters will pay 15 percent, with operators benefitting from a corresponding 15 percent reduction in their taxes to a survivable 20 percent.
