Amid growing criticism on the relationship between gambling firms and top flight football, the Football Association (FA) is reportedly reviewing the appropriateness of football club’s forging relationships with bookmakers as official betting partners, Jason Burt, Senior Football Correspondent for The Telegraph wrote, Thursday.
According to the report, the Football Association is leaning towards a Football Betting Levy, much the same as the recently implemented UK Horserace Betting Levy (see previous reports).
The article opines the FA won’t extend the existing commercial deal it holds with Ladbrokes’ once the term is up given the strict no gambling rules it imposes on association players and with a view to maintaining the integrity of the game under increasing pressure.
The implementation of a Football Betting Levy would alleviate fiscal pressures that drive Clubs and Associations to enter into commercial sponsorship deals with gambling firms, the association believes, a thought process both professional rugby and cricket are also potentially interested in.
