Politicians in Uruguay’s Chamber of Deputies have approved a ban on online casino and poker gambling as part of a larger bill titled the Accountability Law. The bill now moves to the Chamber of Senators for approval from where, if successful, it will go the President Tabare Vazquez for signature.
According to a press release issued via G3 Newswire, online sports betting remains acceptable and in terms of the proposal will fall under the control of the nation’s executive branch. The enforcement regulations are still being refined and will be added as the bill progresses.
Earlier this year there were hopes that Uruguay may choose the licensing and regulation route for online gambling rather than prohibiting the pastime; the Broad Front Party which introduced the banning proposal had earlier appeared to support the former path, but seems to have executed a volte face following a strike by land casino workers protesting moves to legalise online activity.
