The United States Department of Justice (DoJ) is backing major sports leagues and the NCAA in its attempt to block sports betting in New Jersey effectively backtracking on its previous stance (see previous reports).
In a brief filed late Tuesday, the DoJ said any repeal on the state law prohibition for casino and racetrack sports betting would still be illegal and against the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) as these entities are subject to State licencing.
“…as long as the only entities that may engage in sports wagering must be licensed by New Jersey, New Jersey is in effect licensing sports wagering, which is squarely within PASPA’s licensing prohibition,” the brief outlines.
