VietNamNet reports that hundreds of police officers were involved this week in raids on a major online gambling ring in Vietnam, the culmination of an extensive year-long investigation.
Police from the social security and high tech crime units claim that the ring processed tens of millions of US dollars in wagers, and reported that 7 persons were arrested in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
The raid followed the December 2012 breakup of a large internet gambling enterprise in the Bac Ninh province .
Police spokesmen revealed that the latest raids were on a nation-wide criminal organisation that offered internet sports betting in various forms, including horse racing, football and tennis.
During more than a year of operations, the ring generated illegal funds that were daily transferred to banks abroad and amounted to tens of millions of US dollars, they said.
Some of the ring leaders were still being hunted, the police noted.
