Virtual reality could enhance eSports events

Virtual reality technology developer Virtuix claims it has become the first company to host a virtual reality eSports tournament, putting on a show at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

By eSports standards the event was a miniscule affair, involving just a few players suitably fitted with VR gear and turned loose in a FPS (first person shooter) multi-player game, but it powerfully illustrated the potential of VR to change the face of eSports and online gambling.

Virtuix CEO Jan Goetgeluk revealed that his company has raised more than $8.3 million in funding for its VR project, some of it from the shrewd investor Mark Cuban.

The respected business publication Forbes predicts that take-up on VR is likely to be slow but steady, with sales of VR products reaching the $4 million mark by year’s end and rising to around $5.2 million by end 2018.
