A Virgin Islands online gambling law that was passed 12 years ago but never really implemented is set to be fully deployed following confirmation by the islands’ governor and Casino Control Commission this week.
The Virgin Islands Internet Gaming and Internet Gambling Act will enable the U.S. Virgin Islands to boost its flagging economy with revenues derived from acting as a regulatory and licensing jurisdiction for online gambling operators.
In a statement this week, the governor’s office explained:
“This marks a turning point in the diversification of our gaming industry from land-based casinos and racinos, to Internet gaming and gambling…The implementation of this Act will fulfill our mission of attracting very successful global Internet gaming companies to the Virgin Islands, and encourage new investments to our struggling economy.”
The implementation of the new law creates the fourth US jurisdiction that has legalised internet gambling, following New Jersey, Delaware and (for online poker only) Nevada.
The Virgin Islands Casino Control Commission has been authorised to commence licensing and regulatory activities immediately, the governor’s statement confirmed.
