Western Australian government to sell off betting agency

In an interview with the Australian Financial Review this week the racing and gaming minister of the Western Australia provincial government, Colin Holt, revealed that its betting agency is to be sold within the next few weeks in a potentially A$1 billion deal.

The minister indicated that preliminary discussions had taken place with domestic betting giants Tabcorp and Tatts, but that other bidders, including CrownBet and Seven West Media, may be interested.

Colt revealed that the government will issue a request for proposal to major corporates in the gaming industry in the coming weeks.

“I’m responsible to the industry and I’ve reached the conclusion we need to look at the potential privatisation of the TAB to see what opportunities it presents for the industry itself,” Holt said. “I’ve met with some of those big players who we already know exist in Australia. And there may well be two or three others who are thinking of getting into a wagering business.”
