Despite an absence of public statements, it appears that online and land betting group William Hill plc has discontinued its sports betting services to the German market, effective July 20 2012.
German sports betting punters report that they have been cut off, although it appears that other genres of online gambling such as casino gaming remain available.
Other operators who have reportedly discontinued German sports betting offers in the wake of new laws and treaty agreements involving the German states include Paddy Power, 188bet and betoto.
We currently await a response from William Hill plc on a request for a statement clarifying the situation.
In the meantime there is speculation that the exit was motivated by legal uncertainties in the market, or a desire to impress Nevada regulators that the group is serious about being law abiding in regulated nations (during its application for a Nevada licence recently, William Hill representatives were quizzed on this point – see previous reports).
