William Hill will no longer provide gaming services to Greek residents from midnight today (December 4) as it exits the market due to legal uncertainties “beyond its control”.
The move follows similar by Betfair at the end of November who said the Company considered the gambling legislation in the country to be inconsistent with European law. Betfair questioned the cost and conditions associated with gambling permits saying “the associated fiscal conditions attached to these permits, which may include payment of taxes on historical revenues, make the market economically unattractive.”
In early November the Greek Gambling Commission warned unauthorised operators to exit the market within a month or face further action .
